Legally Free Ring Tones

First of all to be very clear on this, it is illegal to download songs from the internet for free without the owner’s permission. Most artists’ material is copyrighted, which means the owner has chosen not to allow their songs to be available for downloads; permission has to be given from the artist for anyone who wants to use any part of their songs in any way.

You can find free, legal ring tones online and not have to pay a cent for them. Unlike some services charging you a “per download” fee or ring tone club subscription charges, there are sites online that will allow you to snaffle ring tones without having to pay a cent. Is there a catch? In many cases there are. However, by following some simple rules you can still get what you want and not give up the house in the process.

And now you can use a ringtone in your advertising as well…!

Some television series and movies will require a particular section of a song for their films and thus have to pay for the amount of time they need. Some record companies charge per second of a song. The more popular the song, the more money is spent. Permission has to be granted before it can be used; otherwise the consequences are not good for the movies budget! Some music is too old to be copyrighted and some sound recordings are not covered by the law. Customers should be aware that there will probably be a catch to any website that advertises free downloads.

There are several sites that offer free musical downloads, a very popular one is Limewire.

Limewire is a file sharing service and is not responsible for files that are downloaded onto their system. The customer is responsible for what they download individually. Customers can download songs from Limewire but is it still illegal, not for Limewire, but for the customer.

Also, there is always the risk that whenever you are downloading anything, you could be downloading other applications as well, such as spyware, viruses, trojans and adware.

Customers should also be aware that there are PRO versions available for music programs which can be bought, however the fee paid for these versions does not cover the cost of a downloaded song, and the artists do not receive any of that money. Paying for a PRO version simply means that the program is faster and has better functions.

“…However, there is a great debate right now with the idea of the totally free music download websites out there. They want you to believe that they have the best of the best in the music but in truth they may be more limited in what they are offering for the totally free price…”

So every ‘free’ download has a catch to it. The new websites created to cater for the iphone users are now very popular due to the invention hitting the market. A lot of them will advertise free iphone accessories but most will be illegal and/or unsafe. Downloading from a site advertising free downloads will probably mean the customer downloads a lot of other un- wanted stuff onto the computer, some will just be annoying, others can affect the computer seriously. Any material that is copyrighted is illegal to download. Sites selling this music will be taken to court, along with individuals who are caught using the site.

Here are some tips on how to avoid downloading illegal songs and obtaining unwanted applications on your computer.

  • The kind of sites to look out for will be the ones with numerous pop up ads that keep appearing on the screen.
  • Never give out any personal information other than what is necessary. NEVER give out passwords or your address.
  • Check the artist’s website of the song you are looking for. They may have the option to download it for free from their own site. Then you know the artist is happy for their material to be downloaded.
  • Most sites that charge a small fee for song downloads will be legal.
  • Use a membership site, pay a one-off fee and then download any videos, music and other applications for free.

There are sections of the law that are dedicated to finding people and companies who download illegal songs. They have to build up evidence of the person downloading then they are able to take that individual to court and prosecute them.

“…The first thing to make sure about is whether or not the website you are using is legal or not. There are many websites claiming to away free ringtones but they may be doing so illegally so be careful…”

Ring tones are free; at least that is what the site says. A precaution, be careful what you download as it could put a bunch of spyware on your computer. While most spyware is simply annoying, some of it could be harmful to your computer, even causing you to give up vital information about yourself in exchange for a free tune.

When visiting any free site, the one thing you’ll probably have to deal with is a bunch of annoying pop up ads. If you use Firefox, most pop ups are automatically blocked. However, if you use Internet Explorer you can expect to have to battle pop ups on each site that you visit.

Other sites are a little cleaner and the webmasters only hope that you click on one or more of their pay per click ads before downloading a song. Most of these ads are quite decent as they will point to other sites offering ring tone information and downloads. If something appeals to you, by all means give it a click.

Not all sites are based in the US, making it possible that someone outside of the US could be trying to rip you off. This doesn’t mean that foreign sites are automatically problematic, but they could be. If you deal with a foreign site, don’t expect anyone in the US to come to your rescue.

So, enjoy your search for free ring tones because there are plenty of sites out there. Just remember: some of the free sites may cost you more in the long run if you aren’t careful!
