At first when people wanted to download songs and videos they could just log onto the internet and browse to find what they wanted, pressed the download button, waited a few moments and then they had the song, no charge and minimum effort.
In the world of today, it is a different story. Downloading songs from the internet saves time and money but has a detrimental effect on the bands and their sales in the CD and LP market.
It is far cheaper to log onto a computer and set yourself up with a load of songs for no, or very little, cost and not take a long time either than go out and buy a CD. Also, you haven’t moved from the comfort of your own home and battled your way through the crowds in the shopping malls, nor have to spend time parking.
Although this set up is brilliant for the consumer, the people losing money are the bands and artists (who are trying to sell their records) and the outlets that sell the CDs, tapes and vinyl.
A band named Metallica were the first to raise an issue with the situation. They filed a lawsuit against a large company website which was selling demos of tracks without permission. The band took the company to court and they ended up with a settlement. The band were not looked on kindly for filing the suit by the public, who were used to being able to receive free tracks and demos.
Downloading tracks this way means the band doesn’t get any royalties for their music. However, the band would receive the royalties if the customer went out and bought the CD.
Now most artists want to make their tracks available for the ringtone market as it is such a huge business, it is good promotion for them and the customer gets the songs they want; everybody is happy.
Some artists who support the download market will have the option on their website to download particular tracks from their work, at no cost to the customer. Other artists who do not agree that downloads should be free will copyright all of their material and therefore anyone else who is selling it are doing so illegally. As long as permission is granted from the band and record company they are signed to, then the songs can be legally downloaded, whether they are on offer for free or there is a charge.
With the invention of the iphone coming into our lives and taking it over by storm, the ringtone market gains another boost in its profits. The iphone is a device that works as a cell phone and music player as well.
While there are sites on the internet that advertise free iphone downloads, the customer has to be very aware of what to look for. Some sites are illegal and can result in trouble with the law, others will let you download the song but also add a lot of other applications that are not wanted or needed. Big companies that are supplying copyrighted music are taken to court and dealt with by a judge.
However there are some sites that allow you to download iphone songs for free. Membership sites are great because the customer pays a one-off fee, and has access to all the iphone songs available and movies, tv series, sports and other accessories. So by paying a fee and becoming a member, you can download as many songs as you like.
There are thousands of websites to choose from when downloading songs and videos, mostly for free, and some will have a small charge. It is best to check if the site is legal before downloading anything.
